The Dujiangyan Panda Base is the only panda base in China open to one-day keepers, and the only research institution in the world specialising in giant panda disease control, rescue, and rehabilitation. Located near the Taoist retreat of Qingcheng Mountain, the base is home to senior pandas, injured pandas, and those returning from overseas for health checks. It is also home to Panda Tai Shan, arguably the most famous giant panda in the world. The base accepts a maximum of fifty participants per day – early booking is essential.
Please note that Dujiangyan is temporarily closed for facility upgrades from April 23, 2026. We recommend Wolong or Bifengxia during this period. The Wolong Panda Base is the newest, largest, and most naturally beautiful panda base in China. Located deep within a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is far from the city and feels untouched by tourism. The air is clean, the bamboo forests are dense, and the pandas live in an environment that closely resembles their natural habitat. The volunteer programme here is well-structured, deeply rooted in conservation, and offers a peaceful, immersive experience you will not find anywhere else.
The Ya’an Bifengxia Panda Base offers a more tranquil atmosphere with fewer tourists and more opportunities to get involved. Home to around forty giant pandas, including adorable cubs in the nursery, the base is lush with trees and has a quiet, intimate feel. It provides a genuine behind-the-scenes look at panda conservation without the crowds.
Your volunteer day begins early. We pick you up from your Chengdu hotel and drive approximately one and a half hours to your chosen base. The road winds through mountains and bamboo forests – a journey that prepares you for the day ahead. Upon arrival, you complete your paperwork, put on your work suit and gloves, and wear your volunteer pass card. You are no longer a visitor. You are a keeper. In the morning, you start by cleaning panda enclosures – removing leftover bamboo, sweeping the floor, and replenishing fresh supplies. You crack bamboo stalks, carry out essential tasks, and learn fascinating stories about individual pandas from the keepers who know them best. At midday, you visit the Scientific and Educational Museum, then enjoy lunch in the dining hall alongside the base staff. It is a chance to rest, reflect, and absorb the morning’s experiences. The highlight of the afternoon comes when you learn to make panda cakes – the nutritious steamed corn buns that are a favourite treat. Under the guidance of a panda dietitian, you prepare these special snacks. You may also create your own panda-themed handicraft to take home. A documentary film about panda conservation deepens your understanding of the efforts to protect this vulnerable species. At the end of the day, you return your working cards, gloves, and suits, and receive your official volunteer certificate from the China Conservation and Research Centre for the Giant Panda. You take a group photo to commemorate your experience. Then we drive you back to your hotel in Chengdu. The entire experience typically runs from around seven in the morning to four in the afternoon.

Before you book, there are a few practical details to keep in mind. Participants should be healthy, with no infectious diseases. Age requirements vary: some programmes accept volunteers from six to seventy years old, while others require a minimum age of eight. Children under twelve and seniors over sixty-six may have different fee structures. Volunteer fees typically range from approximately one hundred and twenty-eight to two hundred and sixty-four US dollars per person, with some programmes charging around seven hundred Chinese yuan per person. Some bases also require a compulsory donation to the Panda Foundation, around nine hundred yuan. Private tours and group sizes affect the final price. What is included in your tour is hotel pickup and drop-off, private transport, an English-speaking guide, entrance fees, volunteer programme fees, lunch, and your official volunteer certificate. Some tours also include travel insurance. Spaces are extremely limited – Dujiangyan accepts only fifty participants per day, and other bases fill up quickly. We strongly recommend booking well in advance to secure your place.
